CreateVertexShader returns a pointer, l_pShader, which is a pointer to an ID3DXBuffer interface. The interface provides the GetBufferPointer method to access the shader code, which is a series of DWORDs. Therefore, the (DWORD*) cast is used. You may have noticed the FAILED macro and the SAFE_RELEASE macro in the examples. The FAILED macro is a convenient way to test the HRESULT returned by a method call to see if the method succeeded or failed. The SAFE_RELEASE macro is used to release interfaces when you are done with them. So in general, the following sequence follows almost every API call that involves memory allocation, to both check if the method succeeded and to clean up one or more pointers if a failure occurred:

The schema partition stores classes and attributes. Classes are the types of objects that can be created in AD DS and attributes are properties for these objects. The schema partition can be likened to a recipe book, which describes the ingredients and processes that should be followed to make a dish. This is just how the schema defines the objects that are created in the other AD DS partitions. Just as it would seem absurd to eat the recipe book, the schema partition only defines the objects but does not actually store those objects. Unlike other partitions, the schema partition is not multi-master. A single domain controller in the forest acts as a schema master and is the only domain controller with a writeable copy of the schema. The Exchange installation extends the schema by adding many classes and attributes into it, including mail-enabled users, mail-enabled groups, databases, servers, and connectors. Each of these classes has a number of properties that are used to describe the objects. When a mailbox object is created in domain partition, as seen in Figure 15-2, a number of attributes can be seen using ADSI Edit. These attributes include homeMDB, e-mail address, RBAC role assignment, and a number of others.

As in previous Exchange versions, two server editions are available: Standard and Enterprise. Both editions are licensed by a product key, which mean you can switch a Standard edition to an Enterprise edition when you enter a valid license product key. Although the Exchange Server 2010 Standard edition is targeted for smaller companies, it also can be used for specific server roles such as Hub Transport or Unified Messaging server roles, as well as in small branch offices. The Enterprise edition supports up to 100 mounted databases at the same time and thus is targeted to large companies. Table 1-5 provides an overview of each edition s offerings.

The major difference between the Standard edition and the Enterprise edition is the number of mounted mailbox databases on that server. You also can create DAGs with an Exchange 2010 Standard edition, but remember that you need a Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition as an operating system to get the cluster features needed for DAGs. As a guideline, you can use Standard editions for all server roles and you need only to plan for Enterprise editions at mailbox servers that will have more than five databases mounted at the same time. This licensing model allows you also to start with a Standard edition, and when you require it purchase an Enterprise edition.

If you ever wondered what happens when the trial edition expires in Exchange 2010,

the quick answer is nothing, except that you will see some extra nag screens to remind you that your Exchange servers need to be licensed. You will stay on your Standard edition license and the expiration of the trial edition will have no functional impact. however, remember that you will not get any support from Microsoft for a trial edition.
