Any Web application is hosted within a Web server; for ASP.NET applications, the Web server is typically Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS). A Web server is primarily a server application that can be contacted using a bunch of Internet protocols, such as HTTP, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP), and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP). IIS the Web server included with the Microsoft Windows operating system is no exception. The Web server say, IIS spends most of its time listening to a variety of ports, including port 80, which is where HTTP packets are usually forwarded. The details of what happens next depend on the programming interface of the Web server and the functionalities of the external modules bound to the Web server.

The focus in that chapter was primarily on the Plan and Deliver phases; this chapter continues with the Operate phase. The Operate phase includes operations, service monitoring and control, customer service, and problem management. Examples of specific tasks include proactive maintenance, trend analysis, and capacity planning. Figure 17-1 shows the different activities that are part of the Operate phase. The goal of the Operate phase is to ensure that the systems are operating within the defined service-level agreements (SLAs) established with the business. You should define your SLAs during the planning phase because the system should be designed to support business requirements. If you don t do this, one outcome is that needless money is spent building overly complex solutions that are difficult to operate (and can potentially result in lower-than-expected uptime).

Problem management and incident management are sometimes confused. Incident management means to troubleshoot an issue to restore service as quickly as possible. Problem management seeks to determine root causes to prevent an issue from occurring in the future. These two activities are often at odds with each other. For example, let s say a server is experiencing trouble. From an incident management perspective, rebooting the server may be the quickest way to correct the problem. However, from a problem management perspective a reboot may destroy relevant diagnostic information needed to fully analyze the issue. As a compromise between restoring the service as quickly as possible and collecting useful information, a well-documented troubleshooting plan should be implemented. This plan should include items such as what information to collect and how long to allow for collecting data.

Trend analysis and capacity planning are closely related to performance and problem management. Trend analysis takes a longer view of performance data and problem management records to predict and prevent issues. For example, collecting data related to CPU utilization can show over time that a server is reaching a predetermined threshold and will eventually be unable to meet an SLA. Another example is correlating a rise in the number of helpdesk tickets related to group management to help justify the implementation of a self-service solution. As you can see, trend analysis on its own does not solve problems, but can have a large impact on keeping operations running smoothly over time. Trending begins with taking a baseline. It is important to establish a baseline that lasts for a full business cycle. This time period will vary between companies, but should include enough time to account for peak busy and slow times. For example, a business cycle may coincide with regular product promotions. This time is considered as peak system usage. Figure 17-2 illustrates the iterative process used for trending systems.
