To do this in Exchange 2003 we suffered from ACL Spray, or the unmanageable proliferation of aCLs. We required more than 10,000 Deny aCLs across around 200 databases to enforce our permission requirements. Exchange 2007 did not provide enough relief for this problem. Even though Exchange 2007 has a better split-permissions model that helped us more easily control which mailboxes administrators could modify based on active Directory OUs, it still requires numerous aCLs to prevent administrators from incorrectly placing mailboxes. With Exchange 2010, we have found we can more easily control which recipient accounts administrators are able to modify and create mailboxes; however, we still had no way to prevent which databases they could place new mailboxes into without some customization. When the ability to control the rBaC scope to specific database was added in Exchange 2010 Sp1, we finally received the solution to our problem. We can now control exactly which databases administrators can create mailboxes in, as well as which OUs they can modify. how are we able to do this First, we created a new management scope containing the databases that will be assigned to one of the administrative groups. This can be a list of known database names or an OpaTh filter. here is an example of a known list, and then a display name filter:

The arguments are the same as the arguments used in the HLSL pixel shader examples, except that the target for a procedural texture is tx_1_0 . The next step is to create a new role group based on the pre-canned recipient Management role group using the newly created management scope along with the recipient OU scope:

Now any administrator who is a member of the ExecutiverecipientManagement role group can only perform recipient modifications on recipients in or below the Executives OU. These administrators can only perform actions on mailboxes within the Executive databases listed via the ExecDBs management scope. When you combine these two items you isolate an administrator group to a handful of databases where they can create/modify/remove mailboxes and only for users in the specified OU(s)! The administrators don t even need to know the names of the databases they have permissions over because Exchange will filter to only those they have permissions for if the administrator does not specify a database name when creating a new mailbox.

If you leave on the default settings for the <customErrors> section of the configuration file, only remote users will get the selected error page. Local users (for example, developers doing some debugging) will receive the classic error page with detailed information about the stack trace as produced by the normal ASP.NET exception handler.

The Exchange Organization administrators know that agencies can only create and work with mailboxes inside databases they have assigned. hurray! Smaller agencies that share a database with other smaller agencies have peace of mind knowing administrators from the other agencies sharing their database cannot modify or work with the mailboxes of their users even though they share a database. hurray! No more aCL spray of tens of thousands of aCLs! hurray x 10,000!
